UCLA, or the University of California, Los Angeles, is well known for arts and theatre as well as the sciences. The list of famous alumni is extensive. Jack Black, Marilyn Monroe, and Gabrielle Union are just a few of many recognizable names.

Here are some fun facts about UCLA:

  • Study Tradition: During finals week, UCLA students participate in “Midnight Yell.” They shout at midnight to take a break from studying.

  • Internet: UCLA launched the Internet in 1969 and sent the first Internet transmission to Stanford University.

  • Colors: UCLA's colors are “True Blue” and gold, and were chosen specifically to represent the state's ocean and wildflowers.

  • Founding: UCLA was founded in 1919 as the Southern Branch of UC Berkeley, and it is the only leading research institution in the world founded in the 20th century.

  • Student Body: UCLA has the largest student body of the UC's.

  • Unique Traditions: UCLA is known for its unique traditions, such as the Beat 'SC Bonfire and Rally, the Undie Run, and the Spring Sing

UCLA has become an increasingly popular school and as a result overall admission rate has plummeted over the last quarter of a century, from 28.96% for the Class of 2004 to 8.57% for the Class of 2026. UCLA is test optional for the SAT or ACT but strong scores can help your chances. The average SAT score for admitted students at UCLA is 1315, and the average ACT score is 31.
