The University of Rhode Island: Big Opportunities in the Nation’s Smallest State

The University of Rhode Island (URI) may be located in the smallest state in the U.S., but don’t let the size fool you—this school is packed with big opportunities, oceanfront views, and just the right amount of New England charm. With its main campus in Kingston, URI is the kind of place where you can go from a morning sailing class to an afternoon poetry slam, followed by a meditation session on the beach—all before dinner. With over 120 student organizations, students can dive into everything from cycling and sailing to slam poetry and, well, actual diving.

URI also boasts some seriously accomplished alumni, including CNN’s Christiane Amanpour and John King (basically, if you want to be a big deal in journalism, this is a good place to start), Tony Horton of P90X fame (so yes, URI has indirectly contributed to millions of sore quads), and NBA star and former Kardashian-adjacent personality, Lamar Odom.

What Makes URI Stand Out (Besides Its Proximity to Some Really Nice Beaches)?

1. Affordability That Won’t Sink You Like a Lobster Trap

Good news for out-of-state students: URI offers the most affordable tuition of any flagship research institution in New England. So, if you want a top-tier education without the top-tier Ivy League price tag, this is one of the best deals in the region.

2. A Diverse and Dynamic Community

URI isn’t just about academics—it’s about building an inclusive and welcoming community. With a significant percentage of tenured faculty identifying as people of color and students from 67 countries, URI is a place where diverse perspectives are valued and encouraged.

3. Academic Excellence That Meets the Real World

With over 203 academic programs, students can explore everything from marine biology to engineering to digital forensics. Plus, experiential learning is a huge deal here, with about 7,000 students gaining hands-on experience every year. Whether you’re working in a lab, interning in Providence, or tagging sharks off the Rhode Island coast, real-world learning is a priority.

4. The Campus is Huge (At Least By Rhode Island Standards)

URI has four campuses with a total of 320 buildings, so despite being in America’s smallest state, there’s plenty of space to explore. The Kingston and Narragansett Bay campuses offer a mix of academics, research, and recreation, with some of the best oceanfront views you’ll find at a university.

5. Small Classes, Big Support

With a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio, URI makes sure you’re more than just a student ID number. Professors here actually get to know their students, which means better mentorship, personalized support, and stronger connections.

6. Location: Beaches, Boats, and Boston Nearby

URI’s location is prime—close to Southern Rhode Island’s stunning beaches, historic Newport, and just a short trip to Providence, Boston, and even NYC. You can go from studying in the library to eating clam cakes by the ocean in under 30 minutes.

7. The Honors Program: A Little Extra Challenge for Overachievers

For those looking to push themselves even further, URI’s Honors Program offers highly individualized, interdisciplinary experiences. Whether you’re writing a thesis, creating an artistic masterpiece, or working on cutting-edge research, the Honors Program is there to help you take your education to the next level.

By the Numbers: How Competitive is URI?

  • Acceptance Rate: 76% (Translation: It’s selective, but not impossible—so bring your best application.)

  • Average SAT Score: 1070-1278

  • Average ACT Score: 25-30
