Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine is a liberal arts college that offers a broad range of majors and minors across different academic divisions. Founded in 1794 as an all male school, Bowdoin become co-educational in 1971. Bowdoin offers over 40 majors across 23 departments, with its most popular programs in government and legal studies, economics, and mathematics.


Some notable alumni include President Franklin Pierce, Reed Hastings (founder of Netflix), Nathaniel Hawthorne (author) and Paul Adelstein (actor in Prision Break). Not making that first list was Stephen Douglas (of Lincoln-Douglas fame) and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Impressive.


Here are some of the unique aspects of Bowdoin College:

  • The Bowdoin Hello: This is a tradition where students and staff greet each other with a smile and a nod, even if they don't know each other. It's a way of acknowledging each other's presence and making everyone feel welcome.

  • Dinner with Six Strangers: This is a program that encourages students to have dinner with six strangers. The idea is to meet new people and have interesting conversations over a meal.

  • Summer Send-Off: This is an event that takes place in the summer before new students arrive on campus. It's an opportunity for incoming students and their families to meet current students, alumni, and staff, and to learn more about the college.

  • Ivies/Ivy Day: This is a celebration that takes place in the spring. It's a day when students wear ivy wreaths on their heads and participate in various activities, such as a parade, a tug-of-war, and a concert. It's a way of celebrating the end of the academic year and the arrival of spring.

  • Liberal Arts: Bowdoin College is a liberal arts college that offers a broad range of majors and minors across different academic divisions, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary programs.

  • Academic Rankings: Bowdoin College is consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the United States. In the 2019 Forbes college rankings, Bowdoin was ranked 26th overall among 650 universities, liberal arts colleges, and service academies and 6th among private liberal arts colleges. In the 2022 U.S. News & World Report rankings, Bowdoin was ranked 6th among national liberal arts colleges.

  • Fulbright Awards: Bowdoin College is a top producer of Fulbright Awards for American students. In 2006, Bowdoin was named a "Top Producer of Fulbright Awards for American Students" by the Institute of International Education.

Bowdoin College's acceptance rate for the Class of 2027 was 7.7 percent, which is the lowest in the college's history. Bowdoin College is a test-optional institution, which means that applicants are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores. For the Class of 2026, among those who submitted scores, the median SAT score was 1460 and the median ACT score was 33.
