The United States Military Academy in West Point, New York is a highly respected institution that provides a rigorous education and training program for future leaders of the United States Army. The academy is also known for producing some of America's most famous leaders, including former presidents, military commanders, Rhodes Scholars, and recipients of Hertz Foundation fellowships in applied physical science disciplines. West Point is also famous for its engineering program, which is one of the most popular majors at the academy. In addition, West Point is a highly residential baccalaureate college that focuses on the arts and sciences

Notable non-military or political alumni include Mike Krzyzewski (basketball coach), Adam Vinatieri (NFL kicker) and Edgar Alan Poe (nevermore).

West Point is unique in several ways:

  • Fully Funded Education: West Point offers its cadets a fully funded education valued at over $250,000, which includes tuition, books, room and board, and medical and dental insurance. Cadets also receive a monthly stipend (between $200-$525) to pay for their other school and personal expenses.

  • Academic Program: West Point's academic program includes an excellent, broadly structured undergraduate curriculum that balances the physical sciences and engineering with the humanities and social sciences.

  • History: West Point has a rich history dating back to the American Revolution, when General George Washington considered it to be the most important strategic location in America. Today, it is still considered to be one of the most prestigious military academies in the world.

  • Campus: West Point is located on a beautiful 16,080-acre campus in Highlands, New York.

  • Opportunities: West Point offers endless opportunities for its students, both during the semester and summer. Students can get involved with research as an undergraduate and have access to a wide range of extracurricular activities.

  • Oldest continuously operated Army post: West Point is the oldest continuously operated Army post in the United States, with American soldiers first occupying it on January 27, 1778.

  • Mission: The mission of West Point is "to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army".

  • Military Program: West Point's Military Program provides an outstanding professional foundation focused on education in the American military ethic and the Army's core values.

  • Majors: West Point offers 36 different majors, with the most popular being engineering, social sciences, foreign languages, literatures, and linguistics, history, business, management, marketing, and related support services, military technologies and applied sciences, psychology, and computer and information science.

  • Rankings: West Point is ranked #9 in National Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News & World Report.

The acceptance rate at West Point is a bit complicated, as different sources provide different numbers. According to West Point's own statistics, the actual acceptance rate ranged from 56 to 70 percent for "nominated and fully qualified" students, who number from about 2,200 to 2,400 each year. According to a recent class profile, only 1,210 people out of 12,294 applicants received offers of application, giving the school an acceptance rate of just 8.6%.

The average SAT score at West Point is 1320 and the range for the middle 50% of accepted students is 1200-1440. The average ACT score for admitted students is 30.
