Wake Forest University is a private university located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with nearly 9,000 students. Wake Forest has over 250 student organizations, including academic clubs, service organizations, cultural groups, and recreational clubs. Students can also start their own organizations if they don't find one that fits their interests.


According the school website, Wake Forest's mascot stems back to the 1920s, when a school reporter gave the Wake Forest football team the nickname "Demon Deacons" after a "devilish" win over the Trinity Blue Devils (now the Duke Blue Devils).


Notable Demon Deacons include former U.S. Senator Kay Hagan, basketball players Tim Duncan and Chris Paul, golfer Arnold Palmer and actor Carrol O’Connor (Archie Bunker).


Here are some of the things that make Wake Forest great:

  • Excellent academics: Wake Forest is ranked 28th by U.S. News and World Report, and 94.5% of its graduates secure employment or enrollment in graduate school within six months of graduation.

  • Small class sizes: Wake Forest has a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, which means that students have the opportunity to work closely with their professors.

  • Beautiful campus: Wake Forest's campus is known for its beautiful architecture and landscaping.

  • Caring professors: Wake Forest professors are known for their dedication to their students and their willingness to go above and beyond to help them succeed.

  • Strong D1 athletics: Wake Forest has a strong athletic program, with 16 varsity sports teams that compete in the NCAA Division I.

  • Vibrant and diverse academic community: Wake Forest offers 45 majors, 60 minors, and additional programs within its six colleges and schools.

  • Challenging academics: Wake Forest's core courses connect learning across the social sciences, sciences, languages, literature, arts, mathematics, and humanities, which helps students think better, analyze harder, and communicate more effectively.

  • Dreaming big: Wake Forest is filled with students who refuse to settle for mediocrity and set their goals high.

  • Good academics and rigor: Wake Forest has good academics and rigor, with a strong "work hard, play hard" culture.

Wake Forest University's acceptance rate for the Class of 2023 was 29%. Half of the applicants admitted to Wake Forest have an SAT score between 1350 and 1500 or an ACT score of 30 and 33.
