Diversity: American University is home to more than 1,830 international students representing diverse cultures and viewpoints from 123 countries. This diversity is also reflected in the faculty, academic programs, and exchanges. The university has a large number of U.S. citizen "Global Nomads" who have grown up outside the United States. The faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and student body represent more than 130 countries.

Academic programs: American University offers nearly 70 majors and minors and pre-professional advising programs in law and medicine. Students may double major or construct their own interdisciplinary major. The university's flexibility allows students to have their major in one school and a minor in another school. In addition, more than 40 majors offer the option of pursuing a combined 5-year bachelor's/master's program.

American University's acceptance rate for the Class of 2025 was 64%. The average SAT score for students admitted to American University is between 1280-1440 and the average ACT score is between 29-33.
