Zig-Zagging to Gonzaga: Basketball, Bing Crosby, and Big School Spirit

Next stop on our college road trip: Spokane, Washington, home to Gonzaga University—a school that’s as famous for its basketball teams as it is for producing legendary alumni like Bing Crosby, John Stockton (rocking short shorts before they were retro), and former Washington Governor Christine Gregoire. But don’t let the hoops overshadow the academics—this Jesuit gem is a powerhouse of both learning and community in beautiful eastern Washington.

Why Gonzaga Deserves a Spot on Your College List

1. Jesuit Education: Mind, Body, and Soul: At Gonzaga, education goes beyond the classroom. It’s about developing the whole person—mind, body, and soul. Think of it as college with a side of life coaching, Jesuit-style. Whether you’re discussing philosophy or volunteering in the community, you’ll be growing in all the right ways.

2. Academic Powerhouse: Gonzaga isn’t just about basketball (although the Zags do dominate). With 90+ undergrad fields, 20 master’s programs, and professional degrees in law, divinity, and pastoral ministry, Gonzaga is packed with opportunities. From engineering to nursing to business, the seven colleges on campus have you covered.

3. Learning by Doing: Seventy-eight percent of Gonzaga students complete internships, research projects, or real-world design experiences. Translation: you won’t just learn about things—you’ll do them. Want to build a robot, study abroad, or make an impact in your field? Gonzaga says, "Let’s go!"

4. Small Class Sizes, Big Attention: With an average class size of 23 and an 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio, professors will actually know your name. No hiding in the back row here (although we hear they’re pretty nice if you “accidentally” miss a deadline).

5. School Spirit That’s Off the Charts: Being a Zag isn’t just about going to school; it’s a way of life. Whether you’re cheering on the basketball team in March Madness or bonding over late-night study sessions, Gonzaga’s community is strong, proud, and full of energy. Plus, with 16 varsity sports, there’s always a game to catch.

  • Acceptance Rate: 76% (Class of 2025)

  • Average SAT Scores: 1210-1380

  • Application Options: Early Action, Early Decision, and Regular Decision with deadlines in December and January.
