Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN is the largest university we have visited on the trip so far. It's huge and a well respected school for engineering. Purdue's official mascot is a locomotive design that celebrates the University's renowned engineering programs. The first Boilermaker Special was presented in September 1940 and has been used to announce campus events ever since. Rides on the Special can be arranged through the Purdue Reamer Club.


Notable alumni include Orville Redenbacher, John Wooden and Chelsey Sullenburger.

Purdue has many unique features that set it apart from other universities:

  • Large mascot: Purdue has the largest mascot of any university, which is often a point of pride for students.

  • Student involvement: Purdue Engineering students are very involved across campus, with over 1,000 student organizations, sports teams and events, and several ensembles through Purdue Bands & Orchestras.

  • Strong alumni network: Purdue has a strong alumni network that can provide valuable connections and opportunities for students.

  • Tuition freeze: Purdue has frozen tuition for six years, making it an affordable option for students.

Purdue University-Main Campus offers more than 200 majors across 10 colleges and schools, including an Honors College, learning communities, and study abroad programs. Purdue’s Main Campus had a total enrollment of 50,344 students for the academic year 2021-2022. The acceptance rate for the academic year 2023-2024 was reported to be 67%.


The average ACT score for students who get into Purdue is between 26-33, while the average SAT score is between 1190-1430.
